What it is made of
Per person, per day: accommodation €75-110 (shared double inside the canal belt), meals €35-55 (lunch at the market or a deli, dinner in an eetcafé), transport €5-10 (tram and metro; the IJ ferries are free), entries €15-25 on average — the Begijnhof, the Vondelpark and the nave of the Westerkerk cost nothing, but the big three (Rijksmuseum €25, Van Gogh Museum €25, Anne Frank House €16.50) weigh on single days. Total €140-200: Amsterdam is expensive and accommodation is the line that decides everything, but booking museums and hotel weeks ahead makes the lower end of the range real.
Where to stay, and what it costs
- 3-4 star hotel in a canal house between Singel and Herengracht — double €150-220 per night: you are inside the canal belt, within walking distance of almost everything, and the stairs are as steep as tradition demands
- B&B or neighbourhood hotel in the Jordaan or De Pijp — €120-180 per night: a real district, honest dinner prices and ten minutes by tram from the centre
