Hagia Sophia is fifteen hundred years of history under the boldest dome ever raised by hand — and today it is a working mosque, not a museum: the ground floor is reserved for those praying. Foreign visitors enter along the upper gallery route (€25, the Museum Pass is not valid), and it is the best spot anyway: from up there you see the Byzantine mosaics, and the dome can be appreciated for what it is. This itinerary puts it at 9, at opening time, so you enjoy it before the day fills up. The rules are enforced for real: shoulders and knees covered, heads covered for women — and they do not always lend you something to cover up with, so the light scarf in your suitcase earns its keep now. On the way out you stay on theme: the Basilica Cistern is three minutes away.

The Basilica Cistern is a submerged forest beneath Sultanahmet: three hundred and thirty-six columns, planted on Justinian's orders to keep the Great Palace in water, and gangways that walk you over the black water. You go down and voices drop by themselves: this is the underground reverse of the city you have just seen in daylight. At the end of the route wait the two upturned Medusa heads, and that is the image you take away. Two honest warnings: the daytime ticket costs 1,950 TL (~€36) and is payable only by card or İstanbulkart; management changed in June 2026, so check the price again at the entrance. Then you resurface and head down Yerebatan Caddesi: the open ground of the Hippodrome is five minutes away.

The Hippodrome of Constantinople is the square beneath the square: Sultanahmet Meydanı traces the ancient racing arena, and under your feet are still the tiers that held a hundred thousand spectators. Standing in a row are the Obelisk of Theodosius — Egyptian, three and a half thousand years old, its edges like new — the Serpent Column cast from the spoils of Plataea, and the Walled Obelisk: three monuments, three worlds, a single timeline to read as you walk from one end to the other. It is free, and after a morning of tickets and gangways this open ground is the breather you needed. Lunch is already sorted and close by: the little lane of lokantas behind Divanyolu is four minutes away — the last chance for simplicity before an afternoon of tiles and mosaics.

Ticarethane Sokak is the little lane behind Divanyolu where the district's office workers have lunch, two steps from Hagia Sophia but well out of range of the laminated menus. The format is the lokanta: the day's trays in the window, you point at what you want and pay by portion — no menu, no waiting, no surprises on the bill. It is the cheapest and truest way to eat in Istanbul, and also the quickest: the time it takes to sit down and the table is full. Do not hunt for the perfect place: the queue of locals at the counter chooses for you. The afternoon sets off again towards the Blue Mosque, six minutes on foot.

The Blue Mosque owes its name to the twenty thousand İznik tiles lining its hall, and it has just found itself again: after years of scaffolding the great restoration is finished, and the prayer hall can be seen whole once more, the way it was conceived. The tiles sit high up, so walk in and look up straight away: the blue arrives a moment later, and that is why the nickname works. Entry is free, but this is a living mosque, not a monument: it closes to visitors during the five daily prayers and on Friday morning until early afternoon — the 15:00 slot in this itinerary allows for exactly that. You enter barefoot and speak softly: shoes that slip off easily make all the difference today. The Great Palace mosaics are three minutes away.

The Great Palace Mosaic Museum is the most overlooked piece of Byzantium in Sultanahmet, and for exactly that reason the most enjoyable: beneath the Arasta bazaar opens the floor of the emperors' palace, and it is a floor that tells stories — hunting scenes, children with a camel, an eagle gripping a snake, all in tesserae the size of a fingernail. These are the everyday images of a vanished court, left exactly where someone trod on them fifteen hundred years ago. After Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, which keep your nose in the air, here you look down, and in peace: no queues, no crowds. On the way out you cross the Arasta bazaar and head down towards Küçük Ayasofya, where the neighbourhood dinner is waiting.

Küçük Ayasofya is proof that in Istanbul you only need to go a hundred metres downhill to change worlds: below the crowds of Sultanahmet begins a quarter of low houses and cats, gathered around Justinian's little Hagia Sophia. On the side streets off the Caddesi you dine in family-run places with tables out on the road: mezze to share, grilled fish and neighbourhood prices, not monument ones. It is the right close for the first day: you have seen the big names, now you know the place where people actually live. Order more mezze than main courses — that is the way here — and do not make it a late one: tomorrow Topkapı opens at 9, and it deserves the full morning.
